A premium package, complete with additional movie channels and a 30-channel audio package provided by the Horsham-based Digital Cable Radio, runs at $29.95 per month. The number of channels will increase as the DSS consortium adds additional satellites.Ī basic DSS cable programming package starts at $21.95 per month. The DSS system can handle up to 150 channels, which rivals the available channels of existing C-Band satellite systems. The two DSS program providers are DirecTV, a GM Hughes Electronics division that offers traditional cable television programming, and United States Satellite Broadcast (USSB), a subsidiary of Hubbard Broadcasting that offers premium programming. Consumers buy the satellite dish and the accompanying receiver/decoder box, and then select from several program packages. The DSS system is something of a hybrid between existing satellite technology and cable television. Because of their complexity, few owners of C-Band dishes could do that.Īn average C-Band dish, with installation and a basic signal descrambler, can start at about $2,200. Installation costs run about $200 and, unlike C-Band systems, consumers can buy a $79 kit and install the small dishes themselves. The DSS system is also cheaper than a C-Band satellite dish system. The dish has a diameter of 18 inches, about the size of a pizza pan, compared to larger C-Band satellite dishes, which have an average diameter of about 7 feet. The DSS system is much smaller, and much less expensive than a traditional C-Band system. The system will be nationally advertised by the end of October. The system is expected to be introduced to the New York City area this week. But DSS companies had trouble meeting the initial demand. The system was introduced in Jackson, Miss., earlier this year, and was expected to reach the Lehigh Valley by spring. The DSS system is being slowly introduced in different parts of the United States to allow the companies involved with DSS to avoid supply bottlenecks, said Bruce C.
